Double-check that you've entered the complete 15-digit number correctly, including any spaces or dashes as they appear on your card.
Ensure you're using the 4-digit code from the front of your Amex gift card, not the back.
Check the expiry date on your card. Expired cards cannot be used for balance checks or purchases.
